Iran’s Revolutionary Guards call for high level arrests
13:17

Iran’s determination to rein in its dissidents continued on Sunday with a call by the Revolutionary Guard commander to try the nation’s
reformist leader Mirhossein Moussavi.

Even former presidents are not safe – Mohammad Khatami is also being accused of masterminding the unrest that followed the disputed June election.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected as President in a landslide – a result that brought thousands onto the streets to protest.

A show trial on Saturday at an Iranian Revolutionary Court saw a French female academic, one British and and one French embassy staff member and dozens of others charged with spying and assisting a western plot to overthrow clerical rule.

Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested and remain imprisoned – a number that includes politicians, journalists and lawyers.

Three US hikers who strayed over the border from Iraq into Iran’s Kurdish region may also have been caught up by Iran’s zeal to crush dissent.

Iran has had them in custody for more than a week.

In spite of strongly worded messages from Washington there is yet no sign that they will be released soon.
